The 2000-P Leif Ericson Millennium Commemorative 2-Coin Proof Set is a historically significant release celebrating the 1,000th anniversary of Leif Ericson's voyage to North America. This collaboration between the United States and Iceland includes two beautifully struck .900 fine silver coins—one from the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia and the other from the Central Bank of Iceland. The U.S. silver dollar features a right-facing portrait of Leif Ericson wearing a Viking helmet, designed by John Mercanti, with a reverse that showcases a Viking ship at sea by designer T. James Ferrell. The Icelandic 1,000 Kronur coin depicts a full-body image of Ericson inspired by Stirling Calder’s famous statue, while the reverse bears Iceland's national coat of arms, designed by Throstur Magnusson.
